Region of Crete - Regional Energy Agency Crete

The Regional Energy Agency of Crete was established by the Region of Crete in December 1993.

The areas of excellence of the Agency are: Energy, Climate Change, Renewable Energy Sources, Energy Saving and Rational Use of Energy, Environment and European and International Co-operation

The main objectives of the Regional Energy Agency of Crete are:

To contribute to the formation of the Regional Energy Policy, in close co-operation with all the responsible bodies
To co-ordinate the energy programmes and activities of several regional and local bodies, to combine them with other European or National programmes
To participate and implement European and National energy programmes projects and networks. To promote National, European and International co-operation.
To provide neutral consultancy services to interested bodies and investors.
To promote programmes, technologies and applications of renewable energy sources, rational use of energy, etc.
To realise educational and training programmes, seminars, technical visits, conferences, etc.
To raise the awareness of citizens, consumers and energy users.

The Regional Energy Agency of Crete has achieved very important results, since its creation:

An energy strategy and policy for the Region of Crete has been elaborated and promoted (adopted unanimously by the Regional Council).
An Action and Implementation Plan for the wide introduction of Renewable Energy sources in the energy system of Crete has been elaborated and promoted. “Sustainable Energy Communities” guidelines are implemented.
Co-operation with Greek Public Power Corporation for the replacement of 300.000 electric bulbs in the Region of Crete (PILOT PROGRAMME)
40 European competitive projects have been (or are being) realised.
The Regional Energy Agency of Crete participates actively in many National, European and International networks.
Many meetings, workshops and conferences have been organised all around Crete and in mainland
Educational activities have been implemented, Editions have been realised (proceedings of workshops, technical brochures, etc.) and Databases have been created.
The Regional Energy Agency of Crete is a partner of the “EU Sustainable Energy Europe Campaign” and of many other similar initiatives or networks.
In 2001, the Region of Crete and its Regional Energy Agency have been honoured by the European Commission with the first award for the Best Regional Renewable Energy Partnership (in the framework of 2001 Campaign for Take-off Awards), for the existing RES plants in Crete and their successful integrated programme “Large Scale Deployment of Renewable Energy Sources in Crete”.

Co-ordination activities at national and European level have been strongly promoted for the target: “CRETE: a PREFERENTIAL AREA FOR EXTENSIVE APPLICATIONS OF RENEW"
